Prince William Reveals the Unexpected Way Prince George Might Follow in His & Prince Harry’s Footsteps
Prince William’s eldest might only be 10 years old, but he already has a clear idea of what his future looks like. And no, we’re not talking about when he inevitably ends up on the throne, we’re talking about his career.
At a garden party at Buckingham Palace, Prince William told the chaplain of the U.K.’s Royal Air Force that the third in line of succession is a “potential pilot in the making,” per Us Weekly. He also told the squadron leader that the young prince would love to visit the base in Lincolnshire, England because of flight. It seems that George’s interests have remained steady. When George was 3 years old, Kate Middleton said her son was “obsessed with planes and wanted to become an air cadet.” From toddlerhood to tweendom, Prince George is nothing if not consistent! (Not a wild card like his brother Prince Louis.)
Honestly, it sounds like Prince George is following in the footsteps of both his dad and his Uncle Prince Harry. And no, not just in the royal sense. Both Prince William and Prince Harry were pilots during their military service. Prince William spent three years as a search and rescue pilot with the Royal Air Force and, after leaving operational duties, became an air ambulance pilot. “When I put my air ambulance hat on and I come here and I fly, I’m one of the team,” he said, per Forces.
Prince Harry, on the other hand, served as an Apache helicopter co-pilot and gunner during his second tour in Afghanistan. In a joint interview in 2009, when they were training together, Prince Harry made a dig at the Duke of Cambridge that probably came off as more good-natured then than it would now as tensions are at an all-time high between the brothers.
“It is still hard work, but I’m better than William, so it’s fine,” he said. Down the line, the question will be if Prince George tops both his uncle and his dad with his piloting prowess. Or … is he just like any 10-year-old — with an interest that is far, far, far from what his actual career will be?
