Meghan Markle pays touching tribute to Princess Diana with sentimental gift from Prince Harry
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been enjoying their time in Nigeria, with the Duchess of Sussex paying a special tribute to her mother-in-law Princess Diana
Meghan Markle wore plenty of glamorous outfits during her time in Nigeria, with one featuring a special tribute to the late Princes Diana.
The Duchess of Sussex has been visiting the African country with her husband Prince Harry, with the pair meeting with key figures, attending charity events and giving a number of heartfelt speeches. Over the weekend, Meghan and Harry met with military families in Abuja. For the event, Meghan wore a necklace featuring a delicate diamond cross on a gold chain. The dazzling piece of jewellery once belonged to Harry’s mother.

Diana’s necklace was gifted to Meghan by Harry, according to People magazine. She wore the cross necklace on Saturday at a reception held at the Defense Headquarters Officers Mess. Meghan paired the necklace with a St. Agni white strapless column dress and had her hair tied back in an elegant up-do. During the reception, an official acknowledged Meghan’s Nigerian heritage in their address.
“Princess Meghan is a Nigerian!” Abike Dabiri Erewa, chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora, said at the event. The crowd then erupted into an applause. The chairman added how she was “excited but not surprised” when Meghan shared the news about her Nigerian heritage “because she is beautiful, intelligent, diligent and hardworking and she stands firm in the midst of challenges.”
Abike also said she hopes Meghan and Harry “come back again, again and again.” The cross necklace is not the first time Meghan has taken inspiration from her mother-in-law during her trip to Nigeria. On the first day of the tour, Meghan was seen wearing a gold necklace which looked almost identical to the one Diana wore during her time in Nigeria more than 30 years ago. The late Princess of Wales visited Nigeria back in 1990 with the then Prince Charles.
Harry and Meghan’s tour of Nigeria is coming to a close after a whirlwind 72 hours, with the two expected to arrive back in America shortly. The couple were invited to Nigeria by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who met Harry last September at the Invictus Games.
