Unusual way Donald Trump ‘saved’ Prince Harry from huge ‘kick in the teeth’
Prince Harry's backlash for the ESPY Award acceptance was a "kick in the teeth" but he was shortly saved from criticism.
Prince Harry’s backlash for the ESPY Award acceptance was a “kick in the teeth” according to critics, but the Duke was saved from a huge amount of criticism after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump became the most important story in the news cycle.
This is because shortly after the Duke of Sussex collected the Pat Tillman award for service to the sports community on July 11, the news cycle moved on to Donald Trump surviving an assassination attempt near Butler in Pennsylvania. Eric Schiffer, chair of Reputation Management Consultants told Newsweek: “Harry is only slightly injured by the association or by his move to accept the award. He will absolutely survive this in part because of the media cycle. No one really paid much attention given the contrast to what happened since Trump was shot.”

The Republican nominee for US President came within an inch of his life after a gunman opened fire at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday evening. Trump was quickly bundled off stage by security agents, with blood pouring down his cheek from an ear wound. The shooter, later identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by security guards at the scene. Prince Harry was overcome with emotion when he collected the Pat Tillman Award in recognition of 10 years of the Invictus Games which Harry co-founded to help wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, both serving and veterans.
The award was named after the late Pat Tillman, a former American footballer who gave up his career to serve in the US military in the wake of 9/11. He was subsequently and tragically killed in Afghanistan in 2004. This was under a backdrop of criticism as Pat’s mother, Mary Tillman, said the award should have gone to an unsung hero. She told the Mail on Sunday last month: “I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award.” After news of the nomination, a change.org petition was launched against the duke, urging ESPN to “rethink” its decision to give him “to receive an honour of this magnitude”.

ESPN previously said Harry was being honoured for his “tireless work in making a positive impact for the veteran community through the power of sport”. The PR expert also said of Harry receiving the award: “It’s a few steps removed from where his expertise really lies. Many times, what you see with Harry is he’s stretching, but the president saved him. “Why is he getting the Tillman Award? This is how Tillman’s mother felt as well. Of all the people, it’s Harry?”
Eric added: “It just has this feel of, ‘What else can he try to elevate himself within?’ and, in some of these cases, he’s getting hit in the teeth.” Upon receiving his award Prince Harry thanked Tillman’s widow, Marie, for her attendance and acknowledged Mary Tillman. He said: “Her advocacy for Pat’s legacy is deeply personal and one that I respect.”
Speaking of the Invictus Games Harry also said: “While so much progress has been made since those first games, the world outside seems to be in an even more precarious state.” The prince stressed that the award did not “belong” to him but to everyone involved in the games.
