Why Brutal letter ordering Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to stop collecting charity cash
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Archewell charity has been ordered to stop fundraising by California's top lawyer as it has allowed its registration fees to lapse since early May
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell charity was slammed as “delinquent and not in good standing” by a stern letter from California’s attorney general. The US state’s top lawyer pulled the plug on the group’s fundraising efforts. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s not-for-profit endeavour had its registration fees slide since early May, according to a formal letter from attorney general Rob Bonta.
The charity has earned itself a “delinquent” label in the registry of charities and fundraisers due to its failure to submit annual reports and cough up over registration fees. The organisation is temporarily barred from carrying out activities that require registration, such as collecting charitable funds or distributing them.
The attorney general’s letter warns: “An organization that is listed as delinquent is not in good standing and is prohibited from engaging in conduct for which registration is required, including soliciting or disbursing charitable funds. The organization may also be subject to penalties, and its registration may be suspended or revoked by the Registry.” According to the Mirror US, Archewell must present documents explaining the late payment and cough up late fees.
After stepping back from Royal duties, Harry and Meghan set up their foundation in the US in March 2020. Archewell not only includes their non-profit work but also profit-making media ventures like Archewell Audio and Archewell Productions.
The notice of delinquency comes on the heels of reports that Archewell Foundation’s revenue plummeted by a hefty $10.4million in just one year.
An insider said: “For whatever reason, it has not been cashed. As soon as the foundation learnt of the problem, they immediately issued another cheque. Harry and Meghan’s team hope this will quickly resolve the issue within the next week.”
